Target Audience Research

The statistics of both ages and genders of people factor in to who watches a horror movie. The most popular age group that watch horror movies are 18-24 year olds and more women watch horror movies then men do. We decided to aim the movie at men & women because the statistics are very close but women do watch more.
Some horror films and their aim group after knowing who watches the movies :
  • Cabin in the woods - This was aimed at young couples, around the ages 16-25
  • The Strangers - This was aimed at men. Specifically young men aged 16 and over.
  • Nightmare on elm street- This was aimed at couples with no specific age range in mind. It is however, rated an 18 certificate so it would be aimed at people aged 18 and over.
After finding this information out, we think that our film should be aimed at both men, and women  I believe the graphic/violent nature of certain shots throughout our film would mean it it most suited to viewers over the age of 18, however as the film is based upon college students, it is most likely to appeal to an audience of under 25's. Before deciding on our target audience, we decided that we should create a survey of our own, rather than relying on information that is already online.

The survey we decided to create will help us to ensure that we have up-to-date information, that is reliable. We included questions on age, gender, occupation, and what their favorite horror sub-genre is. We also included a question to allow us to find out whether they enjoy horror's based on true stories.

We set a survey to be open to 50 people. This enables us to get a response from a wide audience in order to get the most accurate results.

These were our results:

The age group 18-25 was the most popular age group. This is also the same result as the information we found online. This shows that the age group 18-25 are the likely age group to watch Horror films throughout the globe.
After this result, we have decided that we should base my film upon people aged 18-25.

This shows that more females watch Horror films, however there is only two more females than men. I believe that this shows that there is in fact an equal preference between males and females, as there is very little difference. Following this result, we have decided to aim our film towards both men and women. This will allow more people to enjoy the film.

This shows that students, and part time workers are the most likely to watch horror films.

Casting

We originally was going to have three actors and have them walking down to the college but because of personal issues we changed this. The original casting was going to be

Teenagers -
Katie A
Isabel A
Chelsea M
Brandon C

Baron -
Isabel

Because of the personal issues we then changed how we were going to film and decided to film it in the style of the film Se7en. I think played the role of Baron because of the time limit to get the filming done.

Role Allocation

We researched different job roles to find out which ones we would decide to take on -

A Film director is the person who directs of the making of the film. They give direction to both the cast, and crew.
A Film producer is the person who prepares and supervises the whole project from different conceptions to the conclusion of the film. They have the final say on any changes made to sounds and music, and when scenes have to be cut.
The film editor is the person who will edit, chop and change the different shots that have been filmed so that they achieve the best outcome they can. They will be approached by the film director to ensure that it looks good and the way that they had envisioned.
The camera person/guy is the person that controls the camera and films the different scenes throughout the filming process.
The sound person will be the person that puts the different sound effects, and music together.
The actor/actress is the person portraying the character in the film. They are directed by the director and is told what they have got to do in the film.
The researcher searches for all the background information needed and then presents it to other people.

Producer - Georgia Stacey & Zoe Craddock - A producer has overall control over the production of the film and I think we both are the producer as we have control over how each and every little detail is happening.
Director - Georgia Stacey & Zoe Craddock - A directer controls the films creative aspects and guides the crew towards their goal. I think this suits the both of us as we are both filming and have control in the fact of telling the actors where to go and what to do.
Researcher - Zoe Craddock - A researcher searches for information and then presents it to other people. Zoe took this role as she was the one that found the legend and then based the film of what we were going to do.
Camera - Zoe Craddock - The camera man/woman films the action and the gives it to the editor. Zoe has the actual camera to filmed the entire film.
Sound - Georgia Stacey - I am mixing the sounds and adding and changing the layers of music.
Editor - Georgia Stacey
Writer - Georgia Stacey & Zoe Craddock
Music - Machine Head

Storyboard

This was our original storyboards but it is not what we ended up filming. We set a date but I had personal problems and had to push the date back and then my partner got some footage but it was too dark to use. We then set up another storyboard based upon the film seven - we based a storyboard upon the opening scene which is a lot of close up scenes. This is the storyboard we then developed :

The Storyline

The story line we have decided to is based around old legends - we chose one called Baron Samedi which is based around an old legend on Haitian voodoo. The legend is that he is a selfish spirit, chasing after mortal women and that he often is depicted to have a 'fondness' for tobacco and a bottle of rum on him. He likes to disrupt events or other souls, he likes obscenity,he makes filthy jokes to the other spirits and swears a lot - but his main job is to carry the recently deceased to the other side.
We decided to reverse this and that he would take spirits from the bodies of four young college age students in a ritual connected to a book.
The story starts off with the Samedi in mid ritual - the opening starts and then we are shown the teenagers walking down from the college, laughing and joking. They have a party later in the evening and decide to buy an ouija board. They walk to a shop called enchantica on the search for one but end up with a book of rituals instead. They take it to the party and get really drunk and decide to start a ritual - they begin the ritual as joke. At the same time the baron begins the ritual. The energy between the rituals mix and the baron becomes aware of the teenagers - the baron decides to kill the men and keep the women. He lures the teenagers away from the party and kills them with the other vengeful spirits. Unfortunately for Baron, the other side intervenes and uses the teenagers to strip him of power - he then get trapped into book, waiting for the next victim to initiate the ritual.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

Genre research feedback - You have outlined some of the conventions of the genre, including posting a variety film clips to illustrate the sub genres. You have also used the DISTINCT formula I suggested. I would like to see more detail on this, and to see a short history of the genre and how it has developed over the years. These improvements would take this work from a level 2 to a level 3.

Mean Girls Feedback - You have worked hard to include many sophisticated points, including using technical language like diegetic sound etc. However I would like some improvements to get this piece more firmly into a level 3 -
  • Add the film opening to the analysis.
  • Ensure that you discuss the effect on the audience of any points you make.
  • Add images to your analysis to illustrate your points.

Resident Evil - Film Analysis

Resident Evil is a well known filmed based on the video games made by Capcom. The film opens up to a logo - the logo of the 'umbrella' corporation. The voice over begins matched with the words on screen to tell people what umbrella does for the world. It then goes to tell people about how umbrella get their money - almost a foreshadowing. It is said to be unknown to its employees meaning that they have top secret research facilities. It's played as if it's a report on a system and shows holographic satellites in the background.

Representation in Horror including characters in your film

Representation is to present or show or describe something or someone. Everything on the TV is represented by the media - it is also the meaning attached to the stereotyping represented for the audience. The media can change a stereotypes reputation over time - the media also exaggerate on certain stereotypes. Represented is forced through the media in three different ways
- Audience Position
- Audience Interaction // Propaganda
- Cultural Ideology

The main use of representation is through stereotypes. A Stereotype is a portrayal of people or places through a few obvious characteristics.

Representation of characters in Horror films :

Characters in films usually have stereotypes based on their genders.

Women

Women are usually represented as the damsel in distress. They are attacked by the killer because they have been represented as 'weak' and 'delicate.' With the rise of feminism, and changes in society, such as women receiving equal rights, these representations have been getting changed or outright disregarded. People are moving away from the traditional representations, and moving with the times to create up to date representations. Women are now seen as being able to outsmart the killer and solve mysteries in present day films.

Men

Men are represented as being strong, and heroic. They are usually the ones to save the 'damsel in distress' In contrast to this, they are also represented as the killer or the 'bad guy' This is usually a representation of their strength, and power. Following the movement of feminism- women are now beginning to be represented and being equal to men. Some films have done a gender reversal, having a woman as the killer, and having men seen as the weak targets for the killer.

Stereotypes are used a lot horror films. They tend to differ from role to role, most horror films tend to follow very similar stereotypes. Common stereotypes used within horror films:

A hero trying to conquer evil, and save the group at the same time. This is a helpful stereotype because it gives people someone to look up to as a role model, a figure to relate to, or someone to lust after.

A hysterical character (typically a woman) too scared to move. This is a helpful stereotype as it often provokes a response of empathy, as people relate it to their hysterical tendencies, however, this stereotype is becoming more of a problem following the feminist movement as it portrays woman as being weak, and dominated by men.

Young attractive character (usually young, blonde female) This can be a helpful stereotype as it makes the film more appealing to a wider male audience, however it is becoming an ever increasing problem both following the feminist movement that say that films are displaying women as 'objects' and to the public eye, as it portrays that women past a certain age, weight, or as simple as having a different hair color are not 'attractive' to men.

A cocky non-believer/doubter (typically male)This is a helpful stereotype because it gives the audience someone that will reassure them and give them a voice of reason. Although, when this character dies/gets killed it gives them the feeling that all security has gone. This stereotype is very good for keeping the audience on their feet.

Our film will use all the aspects of representation we need to tell the audience what type of characters are in the film. We will try to stick to the conventions of the Horror Genre as close as we can so that the audience can tell it is the right genre of film, for example our main character, Baron Samedi follows the common stereotype of a male killer.

Genre Research

Horror -

The earliest horror films drew upon the legends round Europe, the silent films were the first of their era. They were often also inspired by spirit photography (the blurring of a photo deliberately)
Some earliest horror films were about the three main subjects - werewolf's and vampyres and Frankenstein. When the world was faced with war the films changed - the fear over atomic bombing changed the films and things like Godzilla and King Kong. After the wars the soldiers inspired a new type of horror films - their mutilated faces gave birth to the films of mutants. A technology upgrade started the 'invasion' films - for example Mars Attacks! The 'slasher' films were then made - these shocker the world as there had been nothing like this before. The monsters and ghosts were still as popular but they started to go the exploration of supernatural creatures - creating a new genre. The next decade saw the release of the exorcist which again shocked the world - many countries banned it. Body gore also appeared in films like the Texas chainsaw massacre. Another type of horror film appeared - killer animals. Jaws was released in 1975. The 90s brought the old elements of horror film and turned them into comical horror - Scream is a good example. The 200's bought the zombies out to play and a new twist on the vampyre world. Blade, underworld and Van Helsing all became big box office hits. Resident Evil became the bets selling zombie style film of the decade. The 2010's do a lot of remakes but drop films like Oujia and The Purge.

A Horror film is made to make the audience feel uneasy and a sense of emotional dread and fear. They are often made to replicate our fears as they make good stories are they are built of legends or old stories or books. They often shock us or use a plot twist and often have unhappy endings but this is what makes them entertaining - they give us a sense of adrenaline.
A lot of horror films are hybrid genre's - they mix and match a lot of them to create a better film.

Action Horror - This genre has the elements of gun fights and frantic chases along with normal conventions of horror.

Comedy Horror - This is a mixture of comedy and horror.

Gothic Horror - Often tied in with a romantic storyline that unfolds and is suspenseful.

Natural Horror - This genre often uses mutated animals and/or plants to create it effects. It often overlaps with Sci - Fi or action/adventure as they all show the storyline to it full potential.

Psychological horror - This is one of the most popular horror sub genres. It uses characters guilt, fears, hidden story lines or uses the audiences fears to create its effect. It uses eerie music, emotional instability or supernatural causes to build tension to and freak out its audience. They often have an open storyline so they can make series.

Sci - Fi horror - Often involves aliens and/or mad scientists or an experiment gone wrong.

Slasher - This involves a psychopathic killer that often has a hidden past to how they became this way. They often kill using a chainsaw or knife.

Settings - They are often isolated or hidden/abandoned places with a hidden past. They are often set in the night but not always. They often are filmed in the middle of nowhere - often in woods or an empty town. Church's are often a favourite too as they are religious and a lot of horror films use the thing of being sacrilegious.
Technical Code - They use a lot of slow pace action and editing to make the tension. A lot of diegtic sound gets distorted and non-diegetic sound is 'incidental'. Low lighting is used to create fear and mystery, high and low angles are use to make the audience seem submisive and helpless or dominant and in power. Jumpcuts/jumpscares are used to keep the auidence on the edge of their seats. Point of view shots make the auidence sympatize with the character.
Iconography - Blood,weapons,gore,religous,colours,clothes,masks
Narrative - Beginning/middle/end. Often ends unhappily or involves a cliff hanger.
Character types - Hero/Victim (Protagonist) Villian,Children,Supernatural characters/Monsters/Ghosts/Teenagers.
Themes - Demons/Exorcism. Apocalyptic/ Post Apocalyptic. Nightmares/Religious Beliefs. Good vs Bad/Revenge & Hatred/Haunting.

Task 2.1 - Mean Girls - Opening Scene Analysis - Rom Com

Mean Girls is a romantic comedy and a well loved teen drama. We learn the main characters name straight away - Cady Heron - through a initial voice over. Opening starts with the Paramount Pictures logo, then going into the name of the film.

Cady is very covered up suggesting that she is self-conscious and naive. Her normal clothes, tied up hair and very little make-up say that doesn't want to stand out,she wants to blend in. initially showing a culture shock - revealing outfits, kids being wild; telling the audience she is new to all this. There is a flashback to show what Cady's life used to be and how she lived it.

The scene starts of with a point-of-view shot through Cady's eye's where she is looking up at her parents like a little girl, showing the possibility shes still treated as a young girl and also showing the fact that she is very naive.

Her parents patron her about her 'first day at school' even though she is a not a little child. Her mid shot of a cheesy smile towards her mum and dad displays to the audience she is the apple of their eye and a low angle emphasises her weak position. Before she enters the school building close-up's of Cady are used to portray her nervousness.

The editing used in the opening sequence is mainly straight cuts for continuity in the story line. However freeze frames with a flash sound are used to indicate a change in time. Freeze frames are photograph's from Cady's time in Africa showing what her life use to be like before this making the audience feel more connected to her as she is telling them personal information about her life. The framing also changes when these freeze frames are shown, again indicating the flashback. Slow motion used to show her anxiety and fear at walking into school.

This is the key to understanding the main characters background story and the flashback at the start. The use of diegetic sound starts in the form of Cady's voice over, forms a close relationship with the audience as they feel she is personally talking to them and including them in her life. Her friendly and casual way of speaking further enforces that she comfortable speaking about her life. The non-diegetic sound is the soundtrack that is playing in the background which has a element of unease, highlighting the moments black comedy in the film. The music changes when the scene goes to a flashback to a subtle African influenced instrumental music, highlighting the characters roots and life. When Cady is walking towards the school building a pop song plays in the background, possibly to imply how she feels and symbolise the era of time.

Feedback - Miss Spencer

Can you ensure that you start to tackle the points I made last week, it will be helpful for you to catch up with your work and really focus on getting the written research more thoroughly done and in a more timely manner. This will help in the planning of your own film.

Thank you

Feedback - Miss Spencer

You have noticed many of the conventions of the genres you have written about so far, in terms of all of the areas we look into, you have also embedded the opening sequence into your blog and set it out in an organised and accessible way. However I would like to see a lot more detail in your work. Use the questions in your booklet as a guide to ensure you cover all the areas that are important, but also make sure you are commenting on conventions of the genre. These are important as it will help you plan your own work.

At the moment your work is a level 2, in order to improve you should:
  • Add detail using the booklet as a guide.
  • Go through and check for minor errors (eg the title of your Mission Impossible Analysis)
  • Take more screen grabs to illustrate your points
  • Discuss whether the elements are typical conventions of the genre.
Well done and keep blogging regularly.

Task 2.1 Se7en - Textual Analysis - Horror / Thriller

The film is about two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic "John Doe" sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills -- one sin at a time.
The opening scene is a lot of close up shots mainly of writing on paper and other things to show what the film is about. The music has a slow beat and tempo to it and has a creepy overlay to make the audience uneasy.
The lighting is dark and has a filter over it to make it seem dark and grimey. It is to emphasize the creepiness of the opening. There is no faces in this opening - the only thing you see of the actors if when you see the person razoring his fingerprints out. The main props seem to be old technology and books with writing in. The setting is someones house - this gives a slight bit away about the character.
The editing in the film is quick cut - the do quick creepy shots with out of focus parts to make you focus on what they want you to see. The camera shots are close ups and they put the titles to cut the shots off to make you think about what they meant.

Task 2.1 Mission Impossible II - Textual Analysis - Thriller

Mission Impossible 2's story is Ethan Hunt has been sent on a mission to retrieve and destroy the supply of a genetically created disease called 'Chimera'.  He also has competition from a gang of international terrorists. They managed to steal the cure called 'Bellerophon' and now need 'Chimera' to complete their grand plan of infecting the whole world. He relies on the help of an international thief Nyah of whom he quickly develops a love interest. Time is not only running out for Agent Hunt to find and destroy 'Chimera' before the terrorists get their hands on it, but he must also find 'Bellerophon' so as to save his love interest who has already become infected by the disease from a terrible and rapid death. It has many of the normal thriller conventions in just the three minutes of the opening scene - quick cuts, tension music, diegetic sounds of heavy breathing to show extension or fear, a lot of montage shots and over dramatic scenes. The opening relies heavy on the mystery of why the character is in the desert, climbing alone.
The desert can also show two things - either can show the character being alone, showing loneliness or isolation, but it can also show the character is peaceful or relaxed as if he has got away from what was bothering him. He is climbing without a harness or even a backpack showing he is fearless - this is reinforced by him leaning backward. They show the next part of the scene in slow motion as he jumps from rock to rock as this gives the viewer an 'will he make it?' scare. As he swings into this position -

It replicates the scene of Jesus on the cross - perhaps showing that there is evil/bad things to come and showing he isn't aware of this yet. As he gets his orders he almost looks disappointed and resentful - like his holiday is over and he doesn't want to go to work. The Title begins with colours of red, orange and white -

making the viewer think of fire and explosions - what a thriller usually has. The editing of the scenes have been quickly cut away to show tension. As he is the only one in the shot he is percieved to be the protagonist.

The music in the scene is very different to what is happening - they are also a combination of diegetic and non diegetic sounds. The music starts off quiet,it then begins a fast paced Spanish song to help the viewer understand where the character is and to possible give some background. You can also hear the character make noises of exertion he climbs. This ties in with other ambient sounds like the wind and the sound of the rock scraping. The music stops as the helicopter appears to make the audience think something bad is going to happen, this also creates excitement for the audience.

The title then begins with a theme tunes - the same one that appears in the other Mission Impossible films. The opening for MI2 there were establishing shots showing the setting of the desert and giving away key things about the character before we even see him.

They then show an aerial shot and zoom into the character to help also show the character. Most of the camera shots are either long shots or mid shots of him climbing before a close up on his face - showing his feelings towards his surroundings and to create tension. The slow motion used is to create tension and to give the impression he won't make it

It keeps audience on the edge of their seats - its a typical thing thrillers do. The editing also reflects that - they use a lot of cut edits to make it fast paced and exciting for the audience.

The titles begin within a few seconds - they start in the bottom left and they're coloured in orange to draw attention to them. Then,as the camera shot changes they change the titles to the other side to make sure your attention is on the character. They then switch is back to the bottom left - they keep in line with the camera shots to make sure that they dont get in the way of the character.

His costume and makeup tell us a lot about his character. His laid back clothing style show that he does things in his own time and style - it is also shows that he is not afraid to get dirty.
The lighting and setting in this scene relate to each other - they don't change and stay the same. The spotlight is on him because the lightening shows he is clearly the only one in the scene.

Preliminary Task / Preliminary Evaluation

What is the 180 degree rule?
The 180 degree film in film making is a basic guideline regarding the relationship between a character or an object within a scene. The 'axis' (imagine a line going through the characters) connect the characters and the film makers mostly keep the camera on one side of the axis as it makes it easier for them to film it. If you cross the line it is called jumping the line or crossing the line.
In our film we didn't put this into our film as we didn't have a scene where this was incorporated. To improve our film I would redo it and put a scene in where we use the rule.
What is a match on match action?
Cutting on action or matching on action is an editing technique - continuity editing where one shot cuts to another shot.
We have an example of this when I am typing on my phone - it starts off with a long shot, medium and then close up of me typing into my phone. We edited the film in premiere pro and edited the shots into a 'match on match' action.
What is an eyeline match?
An eyeline match is a film editing technique associated with the continuity editing system. It is based on the premise that the audience will want to see what the character on-screen is seeing. We didn't incorporate this into our film as we didn't get a chance to film the scene.
How did the film making go?
I think the filming went well but it went slowly because we had no idea how to film, hence us not being able to get much footage. We tested different shots - long shots, medium shots and close ups. We also tried to do a pan but the results were unsuccessful. We filmed at Landau Sixth Form Academy and there were some problems with editing - we had some students next to us filming and you could hear me and Zoe talking. We put some music over the top to help cancel this out.
What did I learn about editing on Premiere Pro?
I learnt on Premiere Pro how to cut down pieces of footage and edit them to transition into each other. I also learnt how to layer the music on top. I also learnt to how to arrange the shots so that they flow into each through a match on match shot.
